If you are visiting the Costa del Sol in 2012 or in the not too distant future and are looking for things to do on your holiday, why not pop along to the Donkey Sanctuary in Nerja?
The donkey sanctuary was setup in June 2004 and is run by a group of dedicated and caring volunteers who have given solace to many abused and mistreated donkeys, mules, horses and other animals.
Since 2004, the sanctuary have rescued hundreds of equines and other animals including pot bellied pigs, goats, chickens and cats to name just a few.
The sanctuary is a fully registered charity and is funded entirely by donations but sadly receives no government funding or financial assistance which is hard to believe.
The volunteers at the the donkey sanctuary have given so much to make sure that these poor destitute creatures can live out the rest of their lives in an environment where they are loved and well treated.
If you would like to volunteer as a helper, the sanctuary would be very pleased to hear from you. You can also sponsor a donkey for just 25.00 Euro’s per year which will go a long way in helping to pay for food, bedding, treatments and other vital equipment.
NDS also provide weekly “Hippotherapy” sessions on Tuesday and Friday afternoons which is used to help treat people with physical and emotional needs.
So head off to Nerja this summer and give this institution some much needed help and support. The kids especially will just love it!
How Much Does It Cost?
Entry is free but donations are more than welcome to help keep the donkey sanctuary operational. You can even sponsor one of the donkeys for a year for only 25.00 Euro’s.
Opening Times
10am-2pm and 5pm to 6pm
June open from 10am to 2pm and then 5pm to 7pm
July and August we open from 10-2pm and 5-8pm
Disabled and wheelchair access is good.
How To Get There
Driving: From the E-15 Autovia/Motorway - Take the Nerja exit, head south down the hill towards Nerja. After the third roundabout take the road on the right before the road bends to the left and goes over the bridge. Follow the road until you can go no further and the sanctuary is located just on the left.
